The couple ʙᴇᴀᴛɪɴɢ 700,000 to one odds to ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇɪᴠᴇ quads without ⒾⓋⒻ, in a case that’s thought to be unique in the UK. Creating four non-identical quads, who have just celebrated their fourth birthday.
Katalina Davies, 31 and Matt Davies got together in 2012 they decided they both wanted just one more baby. Both of them separately had their own children, Faith, now 11, and Callum, now 10, but they were keen for a child together. Sadly it wasn’t easy and ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ ᴛᴇsᴛ after ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ ᴛᴇsᴛ showed ɴᴇɢᴀᴛɪᴠᴇ ʀᴇsᴜʟᴛs. Until one day in 2014 when two blue lines showed up revealing and Katalina, 31, happily, was ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ. But, amazingly, it wasn’t one baby… it was FOUR.
Sofia, Aston, Amelia and Roman, who live with their parents in Stockport, Manchester, arrived in February 2015. Katalina said :” I thought I would never be a mum – that it would never happen for me, as each month left me ᴄʀᴜsʜᴇᴅ. But then finally I had a ᴘᴏsɪᴛɪᴠᴇ ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴄʏ ᴛᴇsᴛ. I couldn’t believe it as I looked at the test stick in my hand. When I saw the two little blue lines telling me I was finally ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ at last, I was thrilled. We were ᴅᴇsᴘᴇʀᴀᴛᴇ to add to our family. I went to the ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀ who carried out ʜᴏʀᴍᴏɴᴇ ʟᴇᴠᴇʟ ʙʟᴏᴏᴅ ᴛᴇsᴛs over a couple of days.The sᴏɴᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜᴇʀ peered at the screen for what seemed like an eternity. I knew there was something ᴡʀᴏɴɢ. Was she going to tell me it wasᴇᴄᴛᴏᴘɪᴄ? Or that there was ɴᴏ ʜᴇᴀʀᴛʙᴇᴀᴛ? But nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to hear. She turned to me. ‘I’ve seen three ɢᴇsᴛᴀᴛɪᴏɴᴀʟ sᴀᴄs, ᴘᴏssɪʙʟʏ ғᴏᴜʀ’, I just burst into tears. I couldn’t take it in. Was she telling me that I was ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ with quadruplets? Surely that couldn’t be a problem. It had taken ages for me to fall ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ.”
It was such a shock. The ᴅᴏᴄᴛᴏʀs offered to ᴛᴇʀᴍɪɴᴀᴛᴇ one or two of the babies. It was ʀɪsᴋʏ for all of them and it was ʀɪsᴋʏ for her. But Katalina couldn’t consider getting ʀɪᴅ of any of them. It was nature’s way, and she wanted to see what happened, to take a chance. It was so ʀᴀʀᴇ that fallen ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ with four sᴇᴘᴀʀᴀᴛᴇ ғᴇʀᴛɪʟɪsᴇᴅ ᴇɢɢs. Usually naturally ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇɪᴠᴇᴅ quads happen when one or more ᴇᴍʙʀʏᴏs sᴘʟɪᴛ, but experts had never heard of it happening like this before. Katalina was unique, and so were her babies. They all had to be given a chance. She had ᴍᴏʀɴɪɴɢ sɪᴄᴋɴᴇss until her was 12 weeks ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ, and then luckily everything went smoothly until her was 30 weeks. Katalina belly was absolutely enormous. She kept saying to Matt I couldn’t believe it was going to get any bigger, but it just kept growing and growing.
Katalina was admitted to St Mary’s Hᴏsᴘɪᴛᴀʟ in Manchester in early 2015 when she was 27 weeks ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ and put on bed rest to try and ᴘʀᴇᴠᴇɴᴛ the quadruplets being born early. The quads were born by ᴄᴀᴇsᴀʀᴇᴀɴ sᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴ in February when she was 30 weeks ᴘʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ. Sofia weighed 3Ib 11oz, Roman 2Ib 13oz, Aston 3Ib 2oz and Amelia Ib 7oz. They were all born safe and well. Raising a family comes with its fair share of ups and downs, but a ready-made family of four is certainly going to make parenting even more challenging. The arrival of two girls and two boys turned Matthew Davies and Katalina Martin’s lives upside down with 20 nappy changes, 24 feeds and 12 bed times every day. They cost a lot too.
